Investigating tire and lead-acid battery industry and promoting waste recycling system

Absrtact
This project mainly consists of three parts: (A) Investigating development of tire and lead-acid battery industry and the will of the GHG (greenhouse gas) reduction: the major factor which affects the development of tire and lead-acid battery industry is the price of raw materials. The raising price of raw materials would change consumers’ behavior, and result in affecting recycling system, finally. Lead-acid battery industry is also influenced by other substitutes (e.g. fuel cell battery). In short term, lead-acid battery is still the main product among the rechargeable battery, but if the related industries keep developing, it would be supplanted by substitutes. In the research of specific tire industry, the management of broader tire width (type: 385/R22.5、425/R22.5) should be modified as the management of OTR tires. In addition, rare tire and lead-acid battery company realizes the policy of GHG reduction, hence we organize the reference for them. (B) Calculating the recycling, clearance and disposal fee rates of lead-acid battery disposal enterprise: we calculated the fee rates based on environmental impacts (pollutant control and waste disposal). Disposal enterprises’ cost of pollutant control and waste disposal is NT 1.7952 dollars per kilogram (from questionnaire) or NT 1.0013 dollars per kilogram (from tax document). We substituted the cost into fee rates formula, and the result was NT1.135~1.667dollars per kilogram. (C) Research for recycling of waste: according to the result of this project, to recycle the waste tire to civil construction is the better approach to raise the rates of material recycling, e.g. the SMA asphalt. The reconstruction of road is 5 % per year in Taiwan, so we calculated that around 25.8 thousand tons of waste tires could be recycled. It would promote the recycling rate to 25.8%.
